Post-Pandemic Body Positivity
8th May 2021
After over a year in our homes, shut in by a pandemic, freedom is on the horizon. As is summer. Many of us are a little leery of what lies beyond our doors; not just a lingering virus, but what our post-pandemic bodies are as we emerge.
I have been plus size my whole life, and I have struggled with the term the whole time as well. It is incredibly hard to appreciate your body in a world that values what is lighter, thinner, brighter, smaller, quieter. I devoured fashion magazines and movies as a teenager, hungry for someone who looked like me. I didn’t know how to articulate it then, but representation matters so much. It’s important to see someone who looks like you doing things out in the world, be it something you have envisioned yourself doing, or something that never crossed your mind before. I often think back and wonder if I saw more people like Ashley Graham, Queen Latifah, Adele, Rhetta, Rebel Wilson, would I have the body issues I have now? I just needed to see it to believe that I could do it, too. I see it a lot more now, so I know it is definitely possible.
I also see the opportunity in being that inspiration for someone still looking for that representation for themselves, just like how I needed it. You can be that for someone else. Pay it forward.
Body positivity is a long journey. It is not something that comes overnight. If you are anything like me, there will be bumps in the road & rough days, but also just as many great, bright, sunshiny days! The journey just isn’t linear. The best way to navigate is to go easy on yourself. You only have this one body. Don’t beat yourself up over one day. You’re doing your best. Remember that.
Start small. Start to appreciate your body. Everyday. What are your favorite features? What’s your favorite outfit? What makes it your favorite? Does it make you feel powerful? Does it accentuate your favorite features?
Have you thought of supplementing your wardrobe with something new? Coming in for a bra fitting after an extended period of time can also help. There is quite a difference that can be made with a properly fitting bra, both in look and comfort, and it will make you feel better, too!! Why not treat yourself!! Or, it’s just as nice to give - through the I Support The Girls program you can sponsor someone in our local community with basic necessities like a bra or menstrual products! Check out the store website for more details.
The best foundation to start your body positivity journey begins within you, and a great foundation, or bra, can be also play a great part in that journey.
Happy Mother’s Day!
