Spring Fitness Challenge: Shoveling?
13th Mar 2017
If you live on the eastern half of the United States, you are probably joining us in an unexpected spring fitness challenge: shoveling out from the March blizzard! Some parts of Pennsylvania and New England are getting 18+ inches of snow. Here in Pittsburgh, we're expecting much less but still anticipating a morning workout.
I say workout, because shoveling snow is actually really intense exercise and a lot of people suffer injuries related to shoveling! Did you know, for instance, that it is discouraged for women to shovel snow beyond the first trimester of pregnancy? Shifting center of balance in addition to loosening ligaments can spell disaster. Fit Pregnancy quotes Cleveland Clinic obstetrician Rebecca Starck in advising pregnant people to rely on their partner or neighbor to shovel.
As for the rest of us, the Snow and Ice Management Association (yes, there is such a group!) has some tips for safe snow removal. They suggest:
- stay on top of the snow. Don't wait until you have a foot on the ground to get going!
- wear sturdy footwear with good traction
- remember to stretch! You're working out, after all
- push the snow to the side when possible rather than lifting it
- drink plenty of water. Again, this is a workout. Stay hydrated.
- wear breathable layers.
You can read more about their safety tips here. As for layers, we all know the most important base layer during a workout is, of course, a dependable sports bra. We've got some great options for you here at Levana Bratique. Our bra of the month is the She Fit Ultimate sports bra, which will definitely keep your bust in line as you are clearing snow. Order by March 31 to save 10% and then you can enjoy your new favorite sports bra for more exciting warm-weather workouts!
